The situation

You made a mistake. The mistake is public, or has become public, and is being seen. Maybe by a few people whose opinion matters to you; maybe by many more. The error itself may be small or large, but the public dimension has multiplied the weight of it. Your phone is buzzing or your inbox is filling or you have noticed the silence where a usual signal would be, and the question is what you are about to do in the next twenty-four hours.

The move

Separate the error from the publicness of the error. The error is a fact you can examine, learn from, repair where repair is possible. The publicness is a separate phenomenon that the mind, in the heat of it, is conflating with the error itself.

The Stoic on the public dimension is direct. They who are praised today will be blamed tomorrow, Marcus wrote, and they who blame today will praise tomorrow. The currency of public valuation is unstable. The current weather is not the climate. The intensity of attention right now is a feature of how the medium works, not of how seriously the situation will be remembered. In a week, in a month, in a year, the proportions reshape. This is not consolation; it is accurate information about how the present feeling will relate to the future feeling.

The error itself: examine it. Honestly. With prosochē — careful attention. What specifically went wrong. What in your conduct contributed to it. What you can repair. What you cannot. The accounting matters because the public version of your mistake is not necessarily the accurate one, and the practitioner needs the accurate one to do the work the public version cannot do for him.

Then the response. The temptation is to issue an immediate, comprehensive statement that resolves everything. This is almost always wrong. The right response is, in most cases: acknowledge what is clearly true, apologise for what is clearly owed, defer the rest until the picture has settled. Speed is the noise's preferred timetable, not yours.

The view from above, used surgically. The mistake is large in the immediate frame. Across a year, it will be smaller. Across a decade, smaller still. This is not a way of dismissing the mistake. It is a way of preventing the proportion from being permanently set by the immediate noise.

Source grounding

Marcus, Meditations 4.3: the retreat into oneself, available regardless of the public dimension. The mistake does not erase the retreat. The retreat is where the work of examining the mistake actually happens.

Epictetus, Enchiridion 33: the prescription of character. Immediately prescribe some character and form of conduct to thyself. Apply: the character of someone who has made a mistake and is in the process of repairing what can be repaired, without performing penitence for the crowd's approval. The character is not asking the crowd what it should be.

Marcus, Meditations 9.30: the view from above. The hundred or thousand or hundred-thousand people watching the mistake are a hundred, a thousand, or a hundred-thousand people. The seven billion not watching are seven billion. The intensity is local; the proportion is not.

What the popular version misses

  • Don't care what people think. False instruction. The Stoic cares about reputation appropriately — as far as it serves practical purposes, his ability to act effectively, the relationships that matter to him. The Stoic does not stake his being a good person on being thought a good person, but he does not pretend the public dimension is nothing.
  • Just apologise once and move on. Sometimes correct. Often wrong if the apology is performed for speed rather than for accuracy. The Stoic apologises for what he genuinely sees needs apologising for, in the register of someone who has thought about it, not someone trying to make the noise stop.

The commitment

Three steps, in order. (1) Twenty-four hours of silence on the matter unless legal or professional obligation requires sooner. Use the time for the honest accounting, with one person you trust if useful. (2) An honest, specific, non-performative statement that acknowledges what was clearly wrong, apologises for what is genuinely owed, and indicates what you will do next. Not more than a few paragraphs. Not optimised for the crowd. (3) The rest of the response over the weeks that follow, in conduct rather than in further statements. The work is the apology that lasts. The statement is the start of it.
