The situation

You wanted it. You worked for it. You believed — and were given some reason to believe — that the role was going to be yours. The decision came down differently. Someone else has the title, the office, the announcement, the congratulations. You are expected to be gracious in public. In private, you are eating yourself alive about what it means.

The move

Run the dichotomy of control, but this time honestly.

What was up to you: the quality of your work, your conduct in the role you have, the relationships you built. The honesty with which you went after it. These were yours, you did them well, and nothing about the decision retroactively erases that.

What was not up to you: the decision itself. The decider's calculus. The political weather. The other candidate's relationships. The hundred small contingencies that go into a hire. None of these were ever in column one. You treated them as if they were — you bound your sense of progress to a result that was not in your gift to deliver. The pain you are in is partly the pain of that misclassification, made suddenly visible.

The reserve clause was always supposed to be attached. I will pursue this — circumstances permitting. It was not attached. That is the actual work.

Source grounding

Marcus, Meditations 4.3, on the portable retreat: for nowhere either with more quiet or more freedom from trouble does a man retire than into his own soul. The promotion that did not come is one external arrangement among countless. Your inner condition does not change unless you let it. Marcus is not being cold here; he is being precise about what the promotion was actually worth. The work you would have done is still available. The conduct you would have brought is still up to you. The title is gone. The substance you wanted the title for is still here.

Seneca, Letter 7, on the crowd: I never bring back home the same character that I took abroad with me. The praise and reception that would have come with the promotion are partly what you are mourning. Seneca's point is that the addiction to the crowd's verdict is itself the source of much of the wound. The fewer of these verdicts you depend on, the less the missing one can damage you.

What the popular version misses

Two drifts.

  • "It wasn't meant to be." This sounds Stoic but is actually fatalism in togas. The Stoic doctrine is not that nothing was meant. It is that you are not entitled to know what was meant, and the question is therefore not load-bearing for what you do next.
  • "Their loss." Cope masquerading as wisdom. The Stoic does not need to disparage the decision to absorb it. The decision was the decision. Your response is your response.

The commitment

One specific thing, in column one, this week. Reach out to one person whose career you respect and ask for honest feedback on what they saw. If the answer is you did everything right and got unlucky, you have data — and a reserve-clause to attach the next time. If the answer surfaces something to work on, you have specifics. Either is better than continuing to replay the announcement in your head.
