Discovering you have been lied to

The situation

You have just learned that something you took as true was not. A partner who said one thing was doing another. A colleague who said one thing was reporting another. A friend who said one thing was thinking another. The discovery is not just the new information. It is the retroactive recalibration of months or years in which you were operating on a wrong premise, and the question — what was real, in that time — is suddenly unsettled.

The move

The anger that arrives is propatheia — involuntary first stirring. The Stoic does not refuse it; he could not, and would not pretend to. What the Stoic refuses is the immediate further assent — the move from I have been lied to to I will respond now, in this state, with the response that feels most satisfying. That assent is in column one. Refusing it, for an hour, is the first useful move.

Marcus's morning preparation, in Meditations 2.1, was written in part for this kind of moment. I shall meet with the busy-body, the ungrateful, arrogant, deceitful, envious, unsocial. He names deceitful explicitly. The discovery that someone has lied to you should not be entirely a surprise — it is a possibility the practitioner had been rehearsing. The rehearsal does not erase the sting. It does prevent the sting from compounding into the second arrow: the additional pain of I should not have had to deal with this. The Stoic was already, in the morning, prepared for this kind of thing to be among the day's possibilities.

Then the harder discrimination. Up to you: how you respond. The tone, the timing, the specifics. Whether you act now or wait. The accuracy with which you describe the situation to yourself, before you describe it to anyone else. Not up to you: that they lied. The motivations behind the lie. Whether they will, when pressed, admit it. Whether the relationship survives.

The response, when it comes, will be better if delayed. Twenty-four hours is, in almost every case, the right minimum. The anger that survives twenty-four hours is information; the rest is reaction. Speak the response only after the difference between the two has become clear.

Marcus, Meditations 11.18: the meditation on anger. Marcus walks through the steps of refusing the assent that produces the rage. The walk is operational; Marcus is using it on himself, in writing, as a real exercise on real provocations. The lying is one of the cases he was rehearsing.

Seneca, De Ira 3.36, the evening review. Apply it tonight. What vice have I checked? The vice in question is the immediate retaliation. Checking it, even if barely, counts. The vice acted on is harder to retract.

What the popular version misses

  • Don't take it personally. Useless. Of course it is personal. The Stoic does not pretend otherwise. The Stoic refuses to add additional layers of judgment on top of the personal — that they had to do this to you specifically, that the lie proves you were always going to be betrayed, that the trust you had been giving was the failure.
  • Forgive. Premature. Forgiveness is downstream of the slow accounting of what occurred. The Stoic does not perform forgiveness he has not arrived at. The Stoic also does not insist on revenge.

The commitment

Three things. (1) Twenty-four hours of silence on the matter before any consequential response. (2) During those hours, the evening review tonight, with one added question: what did I assume that turned out not to be true, and where else in my life am I currently assuming something similar. The lie is data not only about them but about the patterns of trust that allowed the lie to operate. (3) The response, when it comes, in the register of someone clear, calm, and not in retaliation. The register is the discipline. The content is yours to determine — possibly continuation, possibly ending — but the register is what the Stoic insists on regardless.
