The situation

A photograph from ten years ago. A reaction time that is not what it was. A morning where you took longer to get going than seems reasonable for your age, which turns out to be exactly your age. The accumulation of small evidences that the body is no longer building toward something, but maintaining, and not maintaining as well. The thought is not catastrophic. It is simply present in a way it was not before.

The move

The Stoic position on aging is one of its more useful contributions. The body is on loan. Every body wears down. This is not a misfortune that has befallen you specifically; it is the condition of being embodied at all. The grief over the change is partly the grief of giving up an illusion you had been carrying — that you were exempt, that the rules applied to others.

The memento mori practice, applied not as morbid focus but as orientation. The fragment is finite. What is on it should be chosen, not defaulted. The realisation that you are older than you used to be is not a loss; it is the clarification of a fact that was always true. The clarification gives you back some of the time that was being spent on the illusion.

Source grounding

Marcus, Meditations 2.11, again: it is possible that thou mayest depart from life this very moment. Not new news. But the aging body makes the fact harder to ignore, which is, in Stoic terms, a gift. The clarity is useful; the regret over the lost vigor is partly an effect of having lived as if the vigor were permanent.

Meditations 12.32: how tiny a fragment of boundless and abyssal time has been appointed to each man. The fragment is not getting longer. The hour you spent on what was not to the purpose, you do not get back. The work — the conduct, the relationships, the things you mean to do — is the only thing on the fragment that you have any control over.

Seneca, Letter 1, on saving time. Seneca writes this from his sixties. The letter is more usable in your forties and fifties — the period when the corridor of remaining time begins to look more finite than it did, and the corrections matter most.

What the popular version flattens

  • Age is just a number. It isn't, and pretending it is is the opposite of the Stoic move. The Stoic accepts the actual state of things, including the body's actual condition. The denial is the failure mode.
  • Stay youthful. Also wrong direction. The Stoic is not trying to stay young. The Stoic is trying to be a good version of whatever age he is. The conduct, the work, the daily practice — these are not age-graded. The body's specific condition is.

The commitment

The evening review applied to a different question for one week. Not what bad habit have I cured today, but given that I have fewer years than I used to, did I spend today on something that uses them well? The question is uncomfortable. It is supposed to be. The discomfort is what produces the small daily corrections that accumulate. Stop the practice after a week; return to the standard review. The shift will have produced a quiet change in how you read the rest of the corpus.
